HR Beware W2 email Scam this Tax Season

Its tax season again, which means a dangerous W2 phishing scam is making its rounds again. The IRS is urging HR and payroll pros to be on high alert for seemingly legitimate emails seeking confidential employee information.

Known as spoofing this scam takes the form of an email from the CEO of your company. They will request a complete list of employee information. E.G. Can you send me the updated list of employees with full details, such as name, SSN, DOB, Home address, and Salary.

If you received and email like this be sure to forward it to phishing at irs.gov with W2 Scam in the subject line.

If you were unfortunate enough to miss the warnings and your company fell victim to this scam you can file a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center.
