Unemployment Rates Fall to 6.1 Percent

Recent employment reports are reflecting a decrease in unemployment rates. During the month of June, the economy had an upswing, with 288,000 new jobs. This caused the nation’s unemployment rate to drop to 6.1 percent – the lowest number since September 2008.

So far in 2014, the U.S. has added nearly 2.5 million jobs. According to the Labor Department, June 2014 marked the fifth month of job gains above 200,000. This echoes the fastest year-over-year employment increase at an average rate of 208,000 jobs a month.

While June’s unemployment rate of 6.1?percent was far below where it was this time last year (7.5 percent), many economists are keeping a skeptical view. Many say these reports aren’t considering part-time workers who are searching for full-time positions and those who have completely abandoned the job market after dealing with long-term unemployment.

Regardless of the issues the U.S. job market is still facing, June’s numbers are offering some optimism for the nation’s economic future. Since unemployment has decreased, many other segments of the economy have showed an upswing. With these broad, economic increases, many more employers are expected to start growing to meet demands.

Out of the many positions that saw growth over June, retail trade, food services, health care, and professional and business services are the fields that saw the largest increases in employment.

The professional business services industry saw the largest increase in jobs, adding 67,000 positions in June alone. Coming in second was the retail trade industry with 40,000 new positions. Health care took third place with 21,000 new jobs.

While these numbers show that the U.S. economy isn’t out of the woods just yet, they do convey a model of sustainable growth that’s finally steering the economy in a positive direction. With this upswing, more and more companies will move from the paradigm of long hours and limited workforce to a mindset of growth.
